Amended water shortage direction for Lake Opuha

14 May 2024

We notify the following Water Shortage Direction pursuant to Section 329 of the Resource Management Act 1991. The notification relates to the present serious temporary shortage of water and the restriction on the taking of water under resource consents from the Opihi River and its tributaries. This notice does not include the Temuka River and its tributaries.

Dam operation

  1. The Dam Company shall operate the Opuha Dam in accordance with the existing consents CRC950577.5 and CRC155950 except that when the water level in Lake Opuha is between RL370 and RL385 metres, the Dam Company shall maintain a release from the Downstream Weir equivalent to the lesser of natural flows or 1 cubic metre per second.

Terms of notice

This amended notice is current for a term of 14 days from the issue of this notice and is an amendment of the existing notice issued 30 April 2024. This notice may be amended, revoked, or renewed by us.

Interpretation

‘Dam Company’ means Opuha Water Limited which holds water permit CRC155950 to release water from Opuha Dam to augment flows, generate power and supply shareholders and which is the owner and operator of the Opuha Dam.

Lake water levels (RL metres) refer to metres above mean sea level in terms of Lyttelton Datum (1937).

Notice of wallaby control work: Lower Twizel River

13 May - 17 May

What: Wallaby control work will be carried out during daylight hours in the Lower Twizel River, from State Highway 8 to the Ōhau River confluence.

When: Monday 13 – Friday 17 May (weekdays only and weather dependent).

Where: Lower Twizel River.

Warning signs will be put in place at all normal points of entry. The Department of Conservation walking track will be closed during this time.

Notice of wallaby control work: Mackenzie Basin

13 May - 25 May

What: Wallaby control by night shoot assisted by thermal camera.

When: Monday 13 – Friday 24 May (weeknights only and weather dependent).

Where: Macaulay River/Godley River.

Warning signs will be put in place at all normal points of entry. Please avoid these areas during the hours of darkness.

This is part of our ongoing control work under the Tipu Mātoro National Wallaby Eradication Programme.


Notice of wallaby control work: Tekapo Resource Recovery Park

13 May - 16 May

Where: Tekapo Resource Recovery Park, Lake Tekapo

What: Wallaby control work will be carried out by night shooting assisted with thermal within this park behind Lake Tekapo township. The public are advised to avoid this area during these nights.

When: Monday 13 – Thursday 16 May (weeknights only and weather dependent).

Warning signs will be put in place at all normal points of entry. Please avoid this area during this time.

Notice of wallaby control work: Mackenzie Rivers

3 - 28 June

What: Quarterly wallaby control by night shoot, with some follow-up control during the day with a gun and dog team.

When: Monday 3 – Friday 18 June (during the week and weather dependent).

Where: Takapō/Tekapo, lower Ōhau and Pūkaki rivers.

The public is advised to avoid these riverbed systems while these operations are being carried out. Please pay attention to signage in these areas.

Amendments to Canterbury Air Regional Plan

25 March 2024

We give notice that, in accordance with s55(2) of the Resource Management Act 1991, the Canterbury Air Regional Plan has been amended to incorporate policies from the National Policy Statement for Greenhouse Gas Emissions from Industrial Process Heat 2023 (NPS-IPH 2023).

On 29 June 2023, changes to the NPS-IPH 2023 were gazetted and came into force on 27 July 2023. They concern NPS-IPH 2023 Policies 3.2 and 3.3 which relate to cumulative effects and updating emissions plans.

The changes must be incorporated into relevant plans, without using the process set out in Schedule 1 of the Resource Management Act (1991). The Regional Council has amended the relevant plans accordingly.

This notice was first published on 25 March 2024, and summary notices were published in Canterbury publications (Northern Outlook, Kaikoura Star, Ashburton Guardian, Timaru Herald, The Press, Otago Daily Times, Marlborough Express) from 27 March 2024.
